After having a bunch of dives with people with a bunch of different brands/types of gear and having everyone I dove with come back alive and problem-free, I'd say that personal preference determines more how "good" your gear is, and not so much other people's opinions. If your stuff works...

Scratch that about it being good - my buddy says vis is really poor at Athens as of this past weekend - only about 3 - 4' or so. The only good news she passed along was that it was much clearer at CSSP in Terrel, though. HTH

My mistake - my brain was thinking of vis in panama city beach, which is better than Destin (in my own personal experience), but you're all correct - the vis gets worse as you move closer to the Alabama border. so for vis... Panama City Beach > Destin > Pensacola at least in my experience...

vis actually shouldn't be too bad now, since it's been quite a while since it rained around here. I haven't been since that last trip at the end of June, but have some friends that went last week - I'll check with them to see how things were.

Thanks, guys - that's exactly what I needed to know (and obviously didn't know before). Looks like that strobe will work just fine for me.

Are you sure it needs the trigger cable? There's no port on the housing for a cable to plug into - it needs to be a slave flash triggered by sensing the built-in flash on the camera. Cheers for the suggestion, though - this is the price range I'd like to be in if I can help it.

I've got a C-4000z/PT-010 combo that I'm really enjoying, and I know full well my pics would be much better if I added an external strobe. Any suggestions on what I could add to my current rig without breaking the bank?

I was on Lake Ouachita in Arkansas - different laws there. IMHO there's nothing really worth diving in around here for fishing anyway - water's too murky.

Lake O update - Water temp at surface - 83ºF visibility at dam - 10' - 15' major thermoclines at ~ 30' (73ºF), 60' (62ºF) & 100' (49ºF) (sorry about the double-post...)

I'd say on thursday the vis was 10-15 feet until my friends collided with the bottom, then it went exponentially down from there. Water temp was around 85 or so - dove the second dive with no exposure suit at all. One thing I'll give Athens credit for is that it would be a good place to work on...
