You could get a combination compass / slate. They are available with a retractor. Mine is an innovative scuba unit. This allows you to hold it way out front, but not worry about losing it. It's not the greatest, but its only 60 bucks.
You can precalculate your headings and tick them off on the slate so you don't get confused.
Of course, you can also use the slate for other things although it is a little small for extended communication.
