GMGC (SW) (DV) USN RET. My primary duty was weapons specialist.

bjgove,

I'm currently at PACOM, located on Camp Smith. What/where is nrmd?

The diving here in the winter is OK. My favorite dive site is a shore dive at Sharks Cove, North Shore, but its not good in the winter due to the wave action. So, its mostly boat dives. The water temp stays in the low 70's. I have to dress pretty warm, but its not bad.

I am not a diver with the military....just a veteran who dives! I have only seen the diver qualification patch on folks twice that I can remember......

Umm...Thats because you are in the Army. The vast majority of US Military Divers are in the Navy and Marine Corps. It has something to do with the ocean and amphibious missions. Go figure.

Army Tanks have poor bouyancy. :tank: :drown:

I started diving because it was taking me places others could not go. Nothing I hate more then ending up at the same hotel with everyone you have been stuck with for the last 20+ days to spend hard earned cash on re-telling the same stories over beers.

Rather "drink" a couple of tanks of compressed air, and have dive stories to tell on the trip home. $$ spent on diving have a greater return on the investment IMHO.

We dive almost weekly in the Yokosuka area. Hit me up if you want to know more.

Actually our M113 APC's and Bradley's would float in very calm water. It wasnt a common practice to float them as they liked to sink very easily and the bradleys were a pain to get set up.

Yes...possibly true. However we are capable of spelling correctly ("Buoyancy") when taking the piss out of other services. BTW...I did a little checking and apparently there are loads of Army divers either with the engineers or SOF types...neither of which I deal with...

The key word was tanks. Not bradleys or APC's. Like those, there are many armored vehicles that can float or traverse water. LAV19 and LAV-26 with props on the back side. AMTRACKS and the new AAAV, 40+ knots on the water.

BTW, my comments were a joke. Appologize for hitting a nerve or sore spot. You really ought to get some cream for the irritation.

Most military dive training takes place in Coronado, CA these days. Especially for SpecOps, or as you put it SOF. Coronado has recently become the JTFUTC (Joint Task Force Underwater Training Center). It is awesome. They even do civilian crossover tec training. I love working there and am anxious to get back.

A smidge of a follow-up...
The US Army actually has it's own diving school...not sure which school the Air Force uses....
BTW...Mr USMC Diver....my NCOIC (former Marine) is curious as to what unit you are assigned to in East Texas...we only know of Ft Hood...just curiosity. Don't take it the wrong way or anything...just that it must suck to be a Marine diver stuck out a million miles from the nearest dive opportunity.

I am a regional trainer for Forward Observation/Insurgancy Operations for Inspector and Instructor (I&I staff) for verious Reserve stations in the 4th Mar Div. I am active duty, working with the active duty counterparts, whom work with the reservist. I work from Wyoming to Texas, Arizona to Luisiana. I travel a lot. Our Battalion HQ is in Houston with 1st BN 23rd Mar. Hope that helps. I am officially attached to 4th Mardiv (MEB), Operations. I do a lot of SOC certification (Special Operations Capable).

And yes, the Army does have thier own dive school, so does the navy, Marine Corps and the Air Force. That however is the basic school. The Special Ops knuckleheads train in Coronado, Ca. It is the SEAL headquarters and has the best "advanced" training facilities. All advanced military diving is done their, except Navy Deep Sea/Recovery...they have their own school for that.

Tell your NCOIC, Semper Fi.
