In the Ikelite you use a collar with a gear/knob arrangement to adjust the zoom/macro on the lens.

so usually for underwater, u just jump in with either the macro lens or the wide angle lens...

or be really rich and have 2 setups... (of course, that is my dream)

yes, you are best to have a plan in place before you go diving and choose lens accordingly.

having 2 setups my dream too!

I know you've probably already eliminated the 18-55, but I want to make it clear what a piece of barrel-creeping crap that lens is. It comes stock for a reason - because it costs the japanese about 20 dollars to make.

Go with the sigma wide, or canon wide, shoot raw, and you'll be completely satisfied with the results.

18-55 is/was/will never be considered...

i no longer own the 18-55, but from what i've seen, it does a good job for what it is.

anywho. if you go down with a 100mm macro, what aperature do you normally use? on land, its hard to get enough dof. underwater, would i go f22 or something and light it with a strobe and have a black background?

Really depends on what you're going for. Underwater I use from f8 to f22; most of the time I start around f11 or f13. For me, f8 is for "specialist" applications when I really want to concentrate on my DOF, I only use it sometimes.

Yes, you will be lighting everything on a dslr with an external strobe.

I control my background with the shutter speed mostly. As my synch speed is 1/320 with the Inon, sometimes that isn't enough to give me the background I want with speed alone so I have to close the aperture down, too. All of photography is a tradeoff. My strobe lights my subject and I control the light with manual settings on the strobe.
