With respect to all prior posters, there is no "average" time on a given size tank and fill that is really meaningful. Use varies with conditions (temperature, current ), activity ( movement, tasks ) personal physiology ( lung capacity, efficiency) and non-physical variations ( adrenalin rush, anxiety level, experience level, current physical condition, etc.) That is why it is important to log every dive, including air consumption information. You create your own dtat base of information about YOU which is very useful for dive planning. That is also why you should monitor your gas supply regularly until you have a good chart of useage under varying conditions. And then you should still monitor your supply. Your consumption rate should decrease with experience, but not on a straight decline. Lots of variables involved on every dive. As for dive planning, both my wife and I (we usually dive aluminum 80's ) have long ago gotten to the point where gas consumption rates ( absent strong current or very shallow dives) are such that ndl's are met long before breathing gas is low enough to dictate ascent. We still monitor our breathing gas closely. It's a good habit.
