Ballistic Dive HID Canister Lights

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a canister HID light in the next month or so. I'm in Australia and came across a local light manufacturer. Can anyone comment on Ballistic Dive's lights? I'm particularly interested in their 24 watt HID.

I noticed a couple of positive comments on Dive-Oz about their 10 watt model. Their HIDs use the Brightstar blubs and ballast. Would you pick them over Dive-Rite, Salvo, Sartek, Halcyon?

I like the lifetime warranty- wonder what all it covers. Odd to see a shiny metal canister though.

Looks very interesting. Never heard of them before.

I'd like to see more info about their products... primarily info about which bulb they are using (Welch-Allen or BrightStar?), the focus angle of the lights (6 degrees? 10? etc?), and more about the lid closing mechanism. Is the cord sealed? Is it a dry lid, meaning if the cord is cut will the battery compartment flood, or are they fully isolated such as the Halcyon and Salvo lights?

Very interesting overall, but I'd like to see more info... and ideally, a head to head review pitting them against others on the market!

I exchanged a few emails with Kym Sutterby about this. The bulb and ballast are from BrightStar. The 10 watt HID has a 10 degree fixed angle. The quote from Kym about the lid mechanism is:

"The manual I have got doesnt have drawings, the only way I can discribe it is it has a stainless steel pin going thru the stainless tube into the plastic plug and that stops it coming out. Very simple and effective system."

To be honest I don't know how the lid is secured, whether it is compression or a screw-on mechanism.

On the water resistance integrity in the event of a cut lead, this was his quote:

"If the cable was cut yes eventually it would get into the head and battery canister but would take along time to get there."

I've also been approuched by our local distributor of Salvo lights. Due to check out their 10 watt canister light this weekend.

IMHO 10 degrees is far too wide. A narrower beam is much more useful.

Agreed. Disappointing. Do they have other reflectors, though?

Their 24 watt model comes with either a adjustable reflector or a diffused video reflector. I haven't asked what angle the adjustable reflector supports.
