British at Rorke's Drift

Isreali at the rescue in Uganda

Canadians at the Last Battle of Vimy Ridge

US Armour at Battle of 43 Easting

Both Sides at Stalingrad

Gentleman Johnny Burgoyne leading an English
army thru the American wilderness in the heat
of summer wearing wool uniforms. Every foot
had to be chopped out of the woods. Wagons
and artillery pieces had to be dragged by soldiers
some of whom were Germans who had been
sold as an entire army by the Prince of Hesse
to the English. After weeks of hell, ambushed
all the way they were beaten and surrendered
to a colonial militia in 1777. Many of the Germans
became Americans.

Many of the Germans became Americans

Well lawman that answers a lot of questions for me :)

One more unmitigated disaster Canadians at Dieppe WW2

DivePartner1 once bubbled...

(I wouldn't add the British who fought at Waterloo since they got whipped twice by militia in subsequent battles--once at Baltimore and finally in New Orleans).

it wasn't the soldiers fault, it was the offiers for not changing tactics to suit the conditions or the enemy

At least they got to drink ale to light of the burning White House before being twice humilated! Still, getting whupped by lowly 'irregulars', militia, pirates even (at New Orleans).

Has to be the British ar Rorke's Drift (Southern Africa).

139 Red Coats defeated 4000-6000 Zulu's (yes, they were throwing more than grass spears, they had guns captured from Isandlwana).

Not really a unit as such though.

Best units should number:
BEF circa 1914 - they could fire 18 aimed rounds a minute with a bolt action (why has that fact stuck with me for 25 years or more?!
The British Marines did a damn fine job in 1982.

Worst decision making should surely include the US Marines in Somalia (aka Black Hawk Down)
