That was a long answer!!!!! Not all of it I would agree with. Mauna Kea is awsome! Only place in the world where you can drive to 14,000! No diving before hand though. Keck is just one of the telescopes up there. It is the largest collection in the world. I see no real reason why kids esp a 14Y/O can't go to the top. It is cold up there, infact there is permafrost, yes, in Hawaii! So take a light jacket with you.
Theft isn't so bad if your not being stupid like leaving a camera or whatever in plain view just inviting theft.
You MUST do the helo tour. Start from the Hilo side to do it. If you go from Waikoloa its almost $400pp...For $169 you get a one hour tour from Hilo and you see volcanosNP and the waterfalls. The longer tour just adds in stuff you can see by driving.
