Who said they were designed with dry suit divers in mind? I never heard that. I was one of the original testers of the fins. I still have my set of prototypes. I also have a set of the two color prototypes. The fins are fins and they were designed to simply be a good paddle fin that would appeal to the tech market. That they do but they are also a great no gimmick recreational fin. No "hinges", splits, complicated straps, or best of all an outrageous price.
One question you had that I do not understand is using an open heel fin like this without some type of boot. They should be used with a boot. I can't imagine a more uncomfortable thing than using an open heel with a spring strap and not wearing something else on mu foot.
 
You should think about wearing rock boots with those fins.
