Dr. Bill, if that's the case then how come I never see the sargassum during the warmer months?

S. horneri is an annual, dying off in SoCal each year in early summer. Giant kelp is a perennial with the entire "plant" living for several years by producing new fronds from the growth regions near the holdfast.
