BSAC insurance covers you to the maximum depth of your certification. My holiday insurance also is limited to the depth of the certification. If I exceed the depth and have an accident I would probably not be breaking any law in the areas where I dive but in at least some of them I would have to pay for my rescue and treatment costs and the insurers would not reimburse me.
Also look up the case of the Malta manslaughter conviction (now overturned on appeal). The legal costs would be substantial. Again if a breach of certification had been involved the defendant would have to pay legal costs themselves, instead of the insurance company.

In the case of Steve Martin's tussle with the Maltese liars it transpired that BSAC had quietly changed their insurance coverage to remove criminal charges. BSAC threw Steve under the bus but thankfully he was helped by others to fight the trumped up attempted murder charge that Malta used to get him extradited under the European arrest warrant. The extradition case was to be heard in the UK high court and the Maltese withdrew all their charges the day before the hearing.

During this period Steve had been under police curfew, had to report to the police three times a week and was ankle tagged. No apologies from the Maltese for their lies and made up charges and there simply was no case to answer, just like the more recent case.

What is really funny is asking a Padi instructor how they intend to upgrade my deco training?

Why is that really funny?

Get the PADI chart showing where divers with some specific training can transfer that training over to PADI so they can upgrade to a higher level. Many of the people I certified as trimix divers came with certifications from other agencies.

I could be wrong but I believe he is trying to say that a PADI instructor would know nothing about tech diving. A broad statement not based in any facts whatsoever.

Funny that he talks about upgrading his deco training and a post or two later says he will stop his training at ANDP. So you aren't actually deco trained are you?

Remember, there are plenty of PADI instructors (instructors from any agency really) that are cross-trained. I was a PADI instructor before I became a RAID instructor but I took courses from UTD IEs, RAID ITs and was doing my RAID Deco 50 with trimix before I became a DM.

Deco trained BSAC Sports diver. Simply put a PADI instructor who is not certified to deco train cannot help me "upgrade" I was not talking about a cross agency trained instructor.

FIFY- " an instructor who is not certified to deco train cannot help me 'upgrade' "

Of course a recreational instructor can't upgrade you, that is obvious and goes without saying. Agency doesn't matter one bit. You only mentioned PADI to take a stab at them.

Can a licensed car driver teach you to ride a motorcycle if they have never done it? Of course not because they are not trained to do so.

I see what you were trying to say but come on, everyone knows a rec instructor can't teach deco.

But can an instructor teach you sidemount or cavern if they only did a user level course, so have 4 dives experience, less than 100 minutes?

Unless they are cross agency deco trained isn't it? I was not having a stab at PADI.

Agency sure does matter. So does the instructor. Do I really need to do the TDI ANDP? Not really. I want to do it for the training I will get as I will probably not have many times where I would use that cert. I could look for dives with ops that do some 40 - 45m deco wreck dives in Philippines. I'm now getting back to my 200 -250 dives a year now that countries have opened borders. Some of those are deco dives.

Most PADI instructors would have no experience nor knowledge of "technical diving". This is because they will be teaching recreational diving and statistically most training is done in resort locations.

Of course some PADI instructors will know about technical diving, but these will definitely be in the minority. There will be even fewer active technical divers who are PADI instructors, i.e. who actively dive with technical kit and procedures, as opposed to have done a tech course in the past.

Web based learning is useful, but not on the same level as direct personal connection.

I cannot understand how any of this nonsense gets posted by people with the educational level needed to write coherent sentences.

Technical divers certified by all agencies are a tiny, tiny percentage of divers. Technical instructors for all agencies are a tiny, tiny percentage of all instructors. If it is true for all agencies that teach both recreational and technical diving, why is PADI singled out for this derision?

why is PADI singled out for this derision?
You're a bit tender about that. As stated, technical diving is a tiny part of scuba diving. it applies to all recreational agencies.

I don't see PADI as derided, but they do have by far the most instructors and teach by far the most recreational divers.

If I say in casual conversation (as I've heard many Pommies and Aussies do) "I've got my PADI", regardless of what cert card they carry, is that derision?
