The only comparison between the Costa and the Titanic is they were both ships. The passengers here could have swam ashore.

I know at least one couple did in fact swim ashore. They were from Calgary. They were probably 2 among dozens that swam ashore but they are the only ones that I have seen reported.

Actually he was comparing it to the Andrea Doria. Not the Titanic.

Amazing how stuff like this happens in threads.

Still... your statement would still apply in this comparison. :thumb:

My bad. Keep hearing this Titanic comparison thing and it's driving me nuts. I can buy a comparison to the Doria as far as the actions of the crew go. Another thing that drives me nuts is the report of people going back to their cabins and grabbing the cell phone and camera but leaving passport, money and return airfare tickets. Mine is always together in a plastic waterproof go bag, so if the worse happens I can at least get home.

It was dark and the water was 50 degrees. Most passengers would not have made it. Not iceberg cold, but shockingly cold for most people.

The interesting story that has come out now is that another Costa captain was on board coming back from vacation and he took over the evacuation and was the one to sound the abandon ship call, not the idiot.

I heard that many did not have passports as they were taken as they boarded, Ppl were told they would be getting them back in the morning, Of course that does not work if the boat is under water. From what I understand the boat hit a rock, then the captain opted to beach it before it sank. He then led the way off the boat personally being one of the early departures and refused to reboard and help rescue efforts.

I am not sure why these large ships are not required to have 2 active captains on the boat at a time. So that one idiot can not kill a whole ship. A second captian would correct a error or report poor judgement as in this case. The fear alone of that with job loss would prevent hot dogging around in your massive ship. Captain and cruize line should be force to pay enviromental damages not much different then the gulf oil spill.

.

I saw the same media reports.

I've been on several cruises and never had them take my passport. Not sure if this it "the norm" on European cruises though.

They prob had two or three "licensed captains". (maybe more). But regardless, by the admiralty of the seas, a ship will always have a Master Captain.

in this case, he left like a coward.

Depending on the countries that you're cruising to, you may have to surrender your passport when you board so it can be processed. That happened to us when we boarded in Peru. We got it back the next day, however.

The second and third in command were in the same lifeboat with the captain. Sigh....

I think that $91.5M is just the trips they have to refund since the ship isn't available. This is probably an $800M-ish boat, and it'll have to be completely refurbished. Not to mention the inevitable lawsuits and, most of all, all the business they'll lose.

Don't forget to have it's name changed..... sales on any boat like this would not be good if we all knew how fast it can sink.....

Maybe when booking a cruize we need to research who the captain is and dig up all his dirt... just like political cannidate :(

I've been on several cruises, and hate to say it, but you get to choose your room in advance. we always make sure not to choose one under any nightclub, disco, theater, etc. Cruises are "party atmosphere's". They want people to go to the clubs and party and drink (buy drinks that cost $8 each).

It wasn't over a nightclub or disco. In fact, the nightclubs and discos on this ship all had one-deck buffers between them and occupied rooms. This was an improvised stage they jammed into a corner in the casino in order to drive traffic that direction. There was not supposed to be anything that loud in this location. Every night at about midnight I'd check the other designed-in stages on the boat, and they'd all be empty except this improvised one. It would've been much quieter to be next to a stage.

The ship was actually well designed to keep the rooms quiet- this was the fault of the cruiseline.

pretty much all cruises are that way now. I mean they give you a presentation on "shopping in port" and they showcase the shops that the parent company cruise lines owns. This should be no surprise.

Cruises are what you make of them. (or any vacation is in that respect). If you can't stand crowds or want "quietness", then cruises may not be for you.

Not like this. I was on Holland the year beforeand it was MUCH MUCH better.

I don't expect the room to be whisper quiet on a crowded boat, but this was as loud as a boom box right outside my door at 1:30 in the morning, almost every night. It was like the band was playing in the hallway. The band (it was a latin band) only knew about 5 songs and would play them over and over and over. The desk would play dumb and pretend this was the first time they've heard of the problem.
