Catherine,

Lots of info from my local cycling club...

http://bicycleuniverse.info/transpo/triggering-signals.html
http://cfa2.blogspot.com/2006/12/triggering-traffic-lights-on-bike.html
http://www.geocities.com/siliconvalley/port/2945/Traffic/TrafficSensors.htm
http://www.humantransport.org/bicycledriving/library/signals/green.htm

The bad news is that most of these sensors don't allow you to keep moving, but rather you have to stop over the detection loop to be detected or at least slow w-a-a-y down.

But at least you've got some info.

With regards to getting going from a stop... Since you have clipless pedals, and I know that you practice your one-leg pedaling drills (right?), instead of pushing off at the start, get the foot still in the pedal a little above parallel and start pedaling. As you step down for your first pedal, get on the seat and pedal with one leg through the intersection (you remembered to down shift before stopping, right?). Once through, get your other foot clicked in and ride away :)
