We headed out the Destin pass Saturday morning despite a storm and some rain for a morning of diving. The first site was Whitehill Reef, a limestone ridge in about 85' of water. It is well known locally for having lots of interesting and varied critters. When we splashed it was still raining and cloudy but nonetheless we enjoyed 30-40ft of visibility at depth; good vis for the panhandle.

The rain had relented and the sun was peaking out by the time our surface interval was up and we had relocated to the Thomas Hayward Liberty ship for dive two. We enjoyed visibility of 40-50ft on the second dive and were treated to lots of marine life. Some curious remora, several barracuda, a goliath was spotted by a few in the group and glimpses of what may have been a 7-8ft bull.

It was my first time seeing a "real" shark on a dive (none reef shark) and I found it interesting how adept it was at staying on the edge of our visibility.

The dives provided some opportunities for shooting some new subjects as well as working on general uw photography skills. Being fairly deep dives, they don't allow as much bottom time (at least for me on a AL80) as nice shallow reefs for really concentrating and taking your time on several subjects but nonetheless there were a few interesting results. The tg-4 does pretty good for a compact, but I was a bit disappointed with some of the contrast, sharpness with some of the shots; I suspect at 85' and just moderate vis the compact sensor will struggle a bit... or it's still my noobish skill :)

Thanks. The dives were great, and it was interesting seeing batfish... such odd creatures. The visibility out of Destin has been near 50ft the last few weeks, glad I was able to get out there!

very nice
