Hey all, Charlie here. I'm a new diver from the DFW area. I'm completing my Open Water this weekend, and am totally stoked about diving. I from Dallas, and am taking 7-10 day vacation come September. I want to go diving!

Travel cost is no real object- I work for an airline. If you were a noob diver and wanted to do some fun diving with a high educational value that allowed for inexperience (safety first!) where would you go?

I've heard of spots everywhere from the Caribbean to the Pac Rim to the GBR. Thoughts?

Bonaire! I had 6 dives to my name when I went. Ended up logging 24 in a week. It's easy diving and you can dive your brains out relatively cheap. Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip!

Do you work for AA? To Bonaire it's United or Delta. Without doing two connections, it's Delta thru Atlanta only typically. Or United from IAH on the Friday night Red-eye. You can also fly AA to Curacao and then catch one of several puddle jumpers over. Mid-week that's as cheap as $50 - double on the weekend. Info Bonaire - Airline Information and Connections.

Curacao actually would be another good choice. You should easily be able to get there by mid-afternoon thru MIA, we can from here.

Literally the same diving as Bonaire but with much easier shore entries - most are off sandy beaches or have dive docks. Most of the Bonaire dive sites have ironshore/coral rubble onshore and just offshore - it's not bad if you have a buddy but can be difficult by yourself.

Most shore dive sites on Curacao have some sort of on-site dive operator/snack shop/tank rental place. None of the dive sites on Bonaire outside of the dive resorts and a few condo complexes south of town have any sort of facilities. Upside to Bonaire is that if you stay at one of the dive resorts and can't find a buddy - you're not trying. I can't say the same thing about Curacao since just about the only "dive resort" there is Lion's Dive. Maybe All West Apts./Go West Diving also but it's in Westpunt - 45mins. from anything.

Curacao is a much bigger island, more people, much more infrastructure (even a McDonalds and Denny's...lol) More nightlife, a dozen casinos, some clubs etc. For escorted shore diving there's the Dive Bus. Obviously either has a range of boat dive operations to choose from also. Oddly enough, on Bonaire, the "shore diving capital" of the Caribbean - we did 4 days of 2-tank boat dives. On Curacao we did one drift dive...

You've got a number of options but if you're really focusing in on diving, I highly recommend Grand Cayman. There are 365 dive sites and some great operators. I have now been twice and both times, I dove with an outfit called "Living the Dream Divers". By far the best dive experience I have had. They have a great custom built dive boat that seats ~18 people but they only take out a maximum of 8 divers at a time. They will pick you up and drop you off at your hotel (on 7-mile beach). There are fantastic wall dives, a really easy wreck dive (SS Kittiwake) and some phenominal reefs and sea life.

I have been fortunate to have gone diving in Canada, Hawaii, Mexico, Grand Cayman and Australia (among others) and to date, my best "pure" diving experience has been in Grand Cayman.

Regardless of where you choose to go, have a great time.

I thought about suggesting Grand Cayman also but first dives there are often deep down the wall. However you can tailor some of it to a newer diver by finding the right trip/operator. 2nd dives on a two-tank morning trip will be done shallower. Many run afternoon trips to shallower sites - often they do their cert. dives then also. Still good dive sites, Aquarium was one of the better dives we did - it was 45' to the bottom.

Also Turtle Reef is another must do shore dive - if you want to do it guided, there's a dive operator there you can arrange that thru. It's a great dive, shallow vertical wall that bottoms out in the sand at 45-50'. To the south there will be a school of tarpon hovering in a recess in the shade - they've been there for years.

Same with Sunset House and Divetech/Cobalt Coast - the other two dive resorts on the west side. Both have easy, shallow dives off their property - and offer boat diving as well. Cobalt Coast is in a quieter residential area on the north side of the island, Sunset House is in south Georgetown. There's also likely to be 2-3 cruise ships in port there daily so staying on Seven Mile Beach might be a better option. All of the dive operators have a free shuttle in that area.

Most dive operators on Cayman (except the cruise operator) will do 6-8 divers max per boat, some like Ambassador Divers will often go with 2. All are required to put a DM in the water for every 8 divers also. Personally I enjoyed Cayman more than either Bonaire or Curacao - it's much more dramatic wall diving. And you're likely to see bigger things there. And there's Stingray City - the best dive you can do in 15'...

Dive operators that are often recommended in the Cayman Islands forum here on SB:

Ambassador
Wall to Wall
Neptunes
Living the Dream
Divetech

But really they're all good. Cayman is such a competitive market that bad ones don't last. Also since so many divers want to work there, chances are good your DM will actually be an Instructor.

Thanks everybody! Curacao and Bonaire sound intriguing, as does Grand Cayman. The adventurer in me wants to hop a jet to Cairne, Australia, and dive the Barrier Reef... any thoughts on that? The wiser part of me knows that I'm a noob and I'll be looking for guided dives with buddies that won't get me killed..

A lot of the more knowledgeable folks I've talked to around town have strongly suggested the Keys for a variety of reasons. That sounds great, but the allure of a week on a live-aboard spending my days diving and my nights laughing with my ship mates over the day's events really appeals.

It's tough to make a decision, and I have to get going on this fast before things start filling up or I run out of time to plan...

GBR is a wonderful destination (and I plan to go back at some point), but for me, the Caribbean has two major advantages - price and time! It takes a long time to get to Cairns (I had to go through Sydney on Qantas) and once in the city it is a couple hour boat ride out to the reef. Compare that with Bonaire or Curacao. Once you do shore diving of that quality, it spoils you a bit!

I too enjoyed diving in Curacao a lot. We didn't do the rent a vehicle deal, opting instead to dive with a great little dive op called The Dive Bus. They had a DM pick us up in a van (bus!) every morning at our hotel and took us to really cool sites. They have a really fantastic house reef right in front of their location, too. They are so fun to dive with and hang out with a cold beer after, too. I'd recommend them without hesitation should you decide to go there.

We stayed at an AI called Breezes that was OK, not great not terrible. Good food & average or so rooms with some issues but nothing major. I've stayed in worse places, that's for sure.

It's a 2 1/2 hr flight to Belize City you can be at the Aggressor dock in 30 minutes.
