Roger on the hand sew, took me a while to find right search parameters. Been reading on sailmakers/repairers and even on this board about hand sewing with an awl or just pliers/thimble, and upolstry thread. There's a few people on ebay selling bonded polyester thread v-69 92 and 138 and I just have to pick some up and start experimenting. Thanks.

I'd recommend nylon upholstery thread over polyester. Stronger. Bonded poly is usually part cotton, and the cotton will rot. Waxed sail thread (polyester) would be good if you can find. For hand sewing I've used upholstery needles and thimble and needlenose pliers. Shouldn't need an awl for neoprene. That's usually for leather. (btw, I sail also, own a 26 footer)
