ear equalizing ????

.....you hear that phrase so over used. It seems you did not equalize early and often enough, try this. As you signal your buddy to descend ON THE SURFACE begin to equalize. Equalize ON EVERY EXHALATION. Also while at work every hour on the hour ( or as many time as you can remeber ) before you go on your trip equalize as often as you can, this will help make it easier to do when you are in the water. Hope this helps. Lets get past " early and often" folks too vauge for most people to follow.
 
Clearly regular excercise (effort) to stretch the eustachian tubes will help, but "early and often" means every few feet while decending before you feel discomfort. Not sure if you're doing it often enough - when you feel discomfort that means - you're not doing it often enough. If you feel discomfort after 3 feet, then try working on your ears every 2 feet ... etc...
