So I am new to shooting video. Just stared shooting with a Sony NEX-7, while I bought it for stills, I love the idea of being able to shoot video. Just back from BVI's with a lot of clips from dives on the Rhone. Figured I would attempt some basic editing with iMovie only to find out it does not support .MOV files. What now? Any suggestions on what application to use. I am very comfortable with Lightroom for stills so looking for something I can learn and grow into.

iMovie manages mov files perfectly fine in fact it is the native format of the program
What recording format did you use on the camera?

I guess need to look again. I had transferred the videos from the camara via lightroom and when I tried to open the files in iMovie it said the file type was not supported. I could be just doing something stupid!! Not the first or last time for that!

Don't use Lightroom at all - it's a program for stills so is probably trashing the formatting - just import the movies directly from the camera into iMovie. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2114

If the NEX 7 is the same as the RX100 that I believe is the case you can save in AVCHD and MP4, for MP4 iMovie will read direct
For AVCHD iMovie will only recognice AVCHD 1.0 interlaced it will not process the progressive files
Other than that all good

All good advice - since I never cleared the card, I will try the iMovie import directly from the Nex-7 and see how that goes.
