We returned from a four day diving trip to the Keys on Thursday and found few lobster. We saw a total of 12 over three dives and only took two. Most were too small (and a couple were too fast) with the two we took exceeding the minimum length by less that a 1/4 inch.

On most dives, vis was 40 to 60 feet and the minimum vis was 25 feet at a 60 feet depth. The DM has been coming to the Long Key area for 15 plus years and according to him this was the worst year ever. Might get better latter on.

Got out right ahead of the storm which was hardly mentioned on Florida newscast or the Miami Herald. Go figure. :flush:

It's been sparse in the Ft. Lauderdale also. Mostly just singles hanging out in some random rocks here.
Too bad because the week before mini-season I spotted whole families of lobster in 15 feet of water just a couple hundred yards offshore.

We've had a decent season further down the keys. Pulled around 200 so far this month. Haven't had any limit days, but haven't been skunked either. Just have to know where to look!

All I can say is congrats. We fished areas that have always produced 100 lobster per season (legal size) and in 4 weeks they produced around 15 to 20. The commercial lobster boats were picking up their pots on both sides of the Long Key bridge before the commercial season started.

Better hunting next year.
