A dive every scuba diver needs to see!

Divers, Anglers, UW Photographers, Videographers travel from all over the world to our waters in Palm Beach County, Florida to see the dense gatherings of Goliath Groupers traveling long distance to our east coast to spawn. If you have not seen them give us a call Florida Scuba Divers for your private dive or share the excitement with fellow divers on a local charter boat. www.FloridaScubaDivers.com Goliath Groupers: Sexual maturity occurs after 5-6 years for males and 6-7 years for females & the race to romance starts August to October. They can reach about 800 lbs and over 8 ft in total length. Congregations of 40 to 90 plus mammoth size groupers mass together on a particular handful of wreck sites. Sexual maturity occurs after 5-6 years for males and 6-7 years for females & the race to romance Despite their intimidating size and somewhat dense demeanor, goliaths are NOT the ferocious brutes some spear-fishermen would like you believe. For the most part, they can be big babies. When threatened, they sound off with a short series of loud booms accompanied with a brief body shake that makes the fish look like its having a mild seizure. But this posturing is almost all bark and no bite, as they will typically retreat to a safer distance or disappear in a deep hole in the reef or wreck the moment they feel their bluff has been called. Even a large group of 20 or more groupers will not stand in your way should you advance into their space, and will often break to one side or the other like a group of park pigeons. FSD recommends that you have your AOW certification & Nitrox Cert. Ask one of our team members at Florida Scuba Divers how you can book your next awesome experience to see this spectacular race to romance!! Glad that I got to see Goliath groupers on my dives in Florida. Of course I'm a bit more partial to our own giants, the giant sea "bass" (Stereolepis gigas), a member of the wreckfish family.
