January 26th is Australia Day!!!

My Country by Dorothea MacKellar (written 1906)

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains,
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me.

PD McCormick Advance Australia Fair

Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We've golden soil and wealth for toil,
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in Nature's gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history's page, let every stage
Advance Australia fair!
In joyful strains then let us sing,
"Advance Australia fair!"

This is a stirring song...gives me a tingly feeling almost as much as The Star Spangled Banner.

:musical_n YOU'LL COME A-WALTZIN' MATILDA WITH ME!! :musical_n

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AUSTRALIA!!

Waltzin' Matilda... shades of "On the Beach" for me (great movie).

Congratulations to my Aussie "mates" (I hope the ladies can also be "mates"). I know how proud we Americans tend to get on July Fourth, so wish you all a wonderful day "down under." Now if someone will send me a plane ticket I'll go "down under... down under!"

That is still, to this day, one of the saddest movies I've ever watched... :116:

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
<da-da-da-da!>
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!

:eyebrow:

Oh yeah, that's right, the first convicts showed up at Sydney Harbour on this day back in 1788 :D

Last night, I unknowingly celebrated Australia Day by having dinner at a nearby Outback restaurant!
