Well, I suppose that the closest I come to having known a "famous diver" would be that Ken Brock, who was President of NAUI for a year or so in the late 70s, attended our church for a while. He was a nice guy, and showed us a real cool film on diving (IIRC) the Sea of Galilee. It was titled something to the effect of "Diving Where Jesus Walked".

Anyone know if he's still around?

I have been blessed to have had the pleasure, in my short diving career, to meet some incredible divers. Of course, for me, meeting and hanging out with Stan Waterman Stan Waterman Home was truly an incredible moment for me. My other shark hero is Rob Stewart Rob Stewart Biography . He is a very down to earth and a likeable guy. His passion has continued to inspire my fight for sharks. I also have had the pleasure of meeting Evelyn Dudas NACD - Evie Dudas Bio and Jill Heinerth Jill Heinerth . They are incredible women in the diving community. I also got to meet Richie Kohler Richie Kohler: Official Site of Technical Diver & Shipwreck Researcher when he did a presentation at our scuba club. They have all shown me so many different sides of diving, and intensified my desire to get out there and explore!

I do have to include my new friend, shark enthusiast, and amazing guy, Matt Johnson. He truly is an inspiration that if you have desire and courage, you can do anything. http://www.scubadivingdream.com/default/scubadivingpage1.html

Wow, a seven+ year old thread that is still going.....

Let see, I haven't met her but how about the diving great Jaqueline Bisset. She sure made an impression on me in my youth. I knew I had to dive after the deep.

Jacqueline Bisset - ah yes - that's how I got my AF call sign 'DeeP.' Never had the pleasure but if I could go back to 197o something... :eyebrow: Rodney Fox, the guy who has been inside a Great White and survived, spoke to my Instructor course back in '71 - small guy with big scars - strange are the ways of celebrity - my wife wasn't around so I cannot verify that old post.:shocked2:

I am surprised that I have not seen the name of my freind, coworker and mentor in my new carreer (critical care nursing). His attention to detail and intense teaching style that he uses today in nursing, is why many of those mentioned in this list sought him out to learn technical diving. He developed or refined many of the protocals followed today. Of course I am referring to Billy Deans.

I've met Wes Skiles, Lloyd Bailey, Steve Berman, and Jill Heinerth, all were very nice and professional.

I've met many cool folks through diving. As a teen in the 80's, one of my highlights was being asked to tag along when my friend and instructor was invited by John Broadwater to dive one of Cornwallis' ships at Yorktown called 'The Betsy.' She was a supply ship intentionally scuttled during the Battle of Yorktown. It was an archaeological study in the 70's and 80's and had a cofferdam built around her. We were asked if we wanted to dive her literally the day before silt was pumped back into the wreck. Mr. Broadwater later went on to lead expeditions to the Monitor wreck. While I'm sure he would probably never remember this dive, I've never forgotten the honor of being able to dive such a remarkably preserved Revolutionary War wreck.

When stationed on Guam, I met a very nice Australian couple named John & Paula Bent. They had opened a dive shop called Guam Tropical Dive Station and told us about how they were searching for a Spanish treasure ship, the Nuestra Senora Zeragosa del Pilar. A short time later, it just so happens they found it. I still use the same Scuba Pro G250/MK 10 set-up I purchased from them.

Besides a lot of the great names of divers already mentioned:

Ned and Ana Deloach - Great people.
Tom (and Patti) Mount - A true perfectionist
Lee Somers - A scholar and a gentleman
Richard Pyle and Jeff Bozanic - Rebreather Pioneers
Captain Don Stewart - Early Dive Pioneer in Bonaire

Steve Zissou from THE LIFE AQUATIC
"can you hear the Jack Whales singing"
AKA. Bill Murry

Hmm... a few others I've met. Jeff Bozanic and I have chatted on the wall at the Casino Point Dive Park. Catalina has had many pioneering divers that I've known including Cap Perkins, Bob Given, Jon Hardy and a host of others my Old Timers prevents me from remembering right now.
