Narcolepsy and diving

A preliminary report of a cave diving death possibly due to narcolepsy. While not strictly a seizure, it falls under the general category of diseases that alter or lead to unconsciousness, which is a key issue with seizure disorders and diving, flying or driving, not so much the 'jerking' motion associated with it.

In addition to what is posted on divingaccidents the ff are alledged, again by personal communication with an instructor at the location:

Narcolepsy was controlled for many years;
patient switched to new medications;
patient had been cave diving for several years;
patient was diving solo at the time of the accident;

As I preliminary matter, I'm not advocating that you do anything to put yourself at risk. Trust me, there's nothing down there worth dying over.

However, it sounds like there is some leeway in the right circumstances for individuals who's seizures are controlled.

The Divers Alert Network ("DAN") maintains a list of physicians who are familiar with dive medicine. Perhaps they might be able to refer you to a neuro who could evaluate you?
