Flew to Kona in February, no questions, checked my gear (no tanks or spear), only thing I was told (by the TSA guy) was to remove any batteries and keep taken apart any dive lights. I was told if they came on during flight, they could heat up and cause a fire. I've never heard of a plane brought down that way, but it's easy to do so why not.
The 50# thing was enforced, tho.

I flew United earlier this month. They also have it on their website that there is a surchagre for sucba gear. I took a don't ask don't tell approach. They did not ask and I did not tell. I was carrying gear for 2 and even had a BC as my "personal item" to carry on and no one noticed or cared. The regulators were in my regular carry on.
