Hello, I'm fairly new to diving and signed up to hopefully get some good info and maybe become a better diver (and learn how to post on a bulletin board!). Being from Oklahoma, I don't get a lot of chances to dive.

Hello amd welcome to the board.

hey silver i too am from oklahoma , bethany to be exact just waiting for the lakes to warm up.

South Okc here. Always looking for more dive buddies. Would love to do more than 3 dive trips this year (last year: Cozumel, Tenkiller, and Clear Springs scuba park)

Well, well, the gang's growing. Welcome to ScubaBoard Oklahoma, a very small group within the hundreds of thousands of divers from around the world. Most of the posters on the board won't know where Oklahoma is, but their advice about diving may still be important to us.

Oklahoma diving is affected by temperature, put your hand under a cold water tap and see what the diving temp will be. If you have a drysuit or a very thick wet suit, this time of year is usually the clearest water, shallow or deep. Theses cold temperatures will be true until mid or late May, and of course spring rains may muddy the lakes to where the cold water will feel even colder.

May and June and October and November are usually cool but tolerable diving for most. . . the summer months can become hot at the surface and comfortable from 10 to 30 feet. Tenkiller is good most of the year, Lake Murray is shallow and affected by wind more than Tenkiller. Grand lake and Eufala lakes can have areas to dive in very limited parts of the calendar. Elmer Thomas lake is small but good for a days diving most of the year. . . This is where I started about 40 years ago.

My opinion, for a one day dive trip. . . Elmer Thomas lake, weekend, Tenkiller, 3 day weekend Beaver lake in Arkansas. And for a week or longer Lake Ouachita in Arkansas is a great diving vacation with camping, motels or best of all take a group of people and rent a houseboat.

I'll try to help any of you if you have questions. Scott

Hey welcome to the board. If you want to meet fellow north east oklahoma divers go to Tulsa Aquanauts (Tulsa, OK) - Meetup.com There are well over 100 divers and they meet once a month in Tulsa to eat!

Im from Broken Arrow myself and try to get in the water as much as possible!

Hello,

I used to live in the Moore area, but the job market brought me down to the dfw area. My friends and I dive pretty regularly in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas lakes and springs. If you are ever wanting to go just send me a pm, we are never more that a few weeks away from our next local dive trip.

Howdy OK Divers,

I'll be in Norman 2/22 - 4/2. Trying to decide if I should bring my gear. I was certified at the end of last summer and I'm anxious to get back in the water. Any suggestions?

Jerry

jerry1818. . . welcome to ScubaBoard, and to Oklahoma diving. We try to predict the future weather, by what the weather and diving conditions have been like in the past. Right now we are having our third heavy snow fall of this season, and pushing for an all time record snow fall for the winter. With that caveat, we "normally" have a dry winter, without much wind, and the lakes clear up from the bottom to top. Tenkiller often will have 30 feet of visibility, and sometimes better around the cliffs in the lower end of the lake.

Water temperatures will favor a dry suit or a layered 7 mm full suit with hood and gloves. There are a number of places at Tenkiller to dive right out of the back of your car. . . better dive places available to boats, and like all winter diving everywhere, you must be prepared to dry off and warm up immediately after the dive.

Because you'll be in the Norman area, day trips south on I-35 to Lake Murray, shore diving near the dam are enjoyable. Another destination from Norman would take the new H.E. Bailey bypass, just past the casino entrance, south west to the Wichita Wildlife Refuge, just north of Ft Sill and Lawton. Elmer Thomas lake is at the foot of Mt Scott and just inside the entrance to the Wildlife Refuge. There is shore diving from several day use areas.

Diving conditions are easy, visibility is often very good, and local conditions are available by calling any of the Oklahoma City, Norman dive shops. Any chance to "Blow Bubbles" is a good chance.
