Shark fin is NOT traditional Chinese food. Only the coastal provinces down south are in to it.
I haven't touched the stuff for many many yrs.
If you know how it is being processed then you probably know most of the nutrients would had been destroyed/gone.
If anyone suggesting that shark fin is tasety then ask them to cook it alone without adding any broth.
It is over rated and over priced.

Making the aquisition and sales of shark fins, just like rhino horn, elephant tusks, marijuana, etc., and passing legislation with fines and prison terms for possession, use and sales only creates a black market, extremely high prices for the product, creates interest and fuels crime plus puts money in the wrong pockets, in other word criminals and law enforcement. It ain't going away so forget it. (This from your ignorant and arrogant reporter.)

I tend to agree that it ain't going away. It's probably a guess as to how much of a black market there would be--it's not cocaine or alcohol during prohibition. And people say there's no real taste to it. But you may be right.

It's the modern day equivalent of 19th century bison hunting in the U.S.

"Bison were hunted almost to extinction in the 19th century and were reduced to a few hundred by the mid-1880s. They were hunted for their skins, with the rest of the animal left behind to decay on the ground.[5] After the animals rotted, their bones were collected and shipped back east in large quantities.[5]The US Army sanctioned and actively endorsed the wholesale slaughter of bison herds.[6] The federal government promoted bison hunting for various reasons, to allow ranchers to range their cattle without competition from other bovines, and primarily to weaken the North American Indian population by removing their main food source and to pressure them onto the reservations.[7] Without the bison, native people of the plains were forced to leave the land or starve to death." -- wikipedia.com

Until the Chinese government gives a damn about the problem, nothing will happen.

Wonder how much these fools pay for a bowl of shark fin soup. There's something insane about these people and their customs.

No reason to pay any attention here in the US. We dont eat the stuff.
Take your concerns where they belong. With the people of asian origin.

Sharks, Lionfish whatever. There is always some Cause you people want the rest of us to get on board with.
Get over yourselves. You are small fish in a big pond.

The US is actually one of the major suppliers of shark fin soup.
Why do you have so strong feelings about it being bad that people care about this? Does it ruin your daily life?

Still haven't banned them in California, waiting on Jerry Brown's signature. J wouldn't let me choose any restaurant in Vancouver that served shark fin soup when we were up there earlier in the year, so we did Japanese for lunch and Fusion Continental for dinner instead of opting for one of the excellent Chinese restaurants in the city that unfortunately all help contribute to shark depopulation.

If every one thought the same as you nothing would ever change.:shakehead: Everything needs to start somewhere. I dont care if you are on board or not that's your choice but there is nothing wrong with people who wish to do something either. You seem unaware of the seriousness of the situation. If you choose to do nothing thats fine but theres no need to be rude about those who do.
