I do the "belt and suspenders". I have a retractor on a D ring, and I also have it attached to my wrist.

This way I can "drop" it and it still stays near my hand, allowing me to use both hands to grab a current line or do something else.

If I was to only use the retractor the camera would be near my knees - not where I want it.

When boat diving I have camera w/retractor & wrist strap handed to me and I then attach it to the D ring, and finally to my wrist.

When I finish taking photos I remove it from my wrist but keep it attached to the D ring. I hold the camera in my hand if I can.

When I get back to the boat I detach it from the D ring and hand it to a deckhand.
