My local dive site is a shore dive at the Gold Coast Seaway. This one particular day I was doing a solo dive to clean up some fishing line and I noticed a moray eel which at first I thought was dead.
It had swallowed three hooks and gone into a spin and wrapped itself in line so it was basically on the sea floor helpless and left to die. Once I noticed it's gills moving I thought I would try to free it. Once I started I immediately felt responsible for it and would not quit until it was free. I ended up getting a local diver to get out of the water and get some wire cutters as it was the only way I could get one of the hooks out.
It took me a while but I managed to free the eel. I could tell it was very sore after having me ripping hooks out its mouth but at least it had another chance of survival. I have seen it a couple of times since so it's great to know it's still around.
