Are you sure? I have asked mods to close a thread, and had them do so. Obviously there had to be a justifiable reason.

I have also requested a thread be closed and it was although it was briefly reopened so a member of the staff could get in the last word.

... more likely not reopened ... staff members can respond to closed threads, although they're not supposed to. But unless they were involved in the decision to close it, sometimes they don't realize it's closed until after they've responded.

I saw the story the other day on the Drudge Report and thought it was a shame for him take the octopus. It also seems a shame that the area isn't protected. I would probably tell the person it is poor taste and form to take the GPO. Short of letting my "red neck" show (which is always a possibility) not much else I could do.

I am glad that the story made the news and that there is now discussion about the situation.

I am a hunter (land) but I take that role with the responsibilities that safety, ethics and conversation demand.

You have all offended me.

Wonder if these posts will get moderated out as they are not on topic of the initial thread.

OHH I found out the other night that OP's cannot request a thread be closed, even if it gets out of hand... I found that interesting.
There's no rule against making a request, but it's simply not within the OP's power to force a discussion thread to be closed. The assessment of whether the thread is out of hand and needs to be closed to prevent further disruption is made by the moderating team only.

May I ask why? If the thread turned into something far removed from what the OP intended, what is left to be gained by anyone but those who would turn it into a troll fest?

If I am thinking about the correct thread, that is in fact what happened. The longish response was being typed at the same time the thread was being closed. That fact was also noted on the thread.

Just because you start a thread, why should you be able to control (censor) where it goes?

Not sure the technical term for it then but let's just say there was no doubt it had been closed, no doubt at all, but one of the staff decided they had to get in the last word so they posted to it.

The content of all posts and threads is the property of SB as soon as it's published. The authors of posts have a sort of grace period during which they may change their minds about what they posted, but once that period has passed, all decisions about changes to the content, including whether a thread remains open, reside with the moderating team. A member may request that a thread be closed, and the team will consider the request, but it is by no means guaranteed that the request will be approved. The moderating team members are more than capable of making determinations about whether a thread is a "troll fest" or whether continued discussion remains productive. At some point in a thread's life, it quite naturally moves away from the original intent of the member who opened it, just as any conversation among a group of people wanders in new directions. That's not a reason for closing the thread, and in fact, more often than not, these new directions enrich the discussion in some way.

If I may, things can go a completely different direction than the OP thought it would, but stay on topic. Sometimes the topic shifts but is still related to the OP's topic. These are not troll fests, but natural progressions of the original posts. If they go to far off topic they can be split and often are. A good example would be to split this discussion off and place it in site support since it is completely off topic. And in many cases the members bring them back to topic. Most of the time when there are requests to close a thread, it is because the OP hasn't liked the responses, but that is the nature of discussion boards. Not everyone will always agree with you.
