I would have said no to scuba diving being a sport untill I read that. Thank you, I HAVE SEEN THE LIGHT!! :D

LOL! Oh come on now no need to be sarcastic. I bruise easily :D

I actually had this debate a million times with my friends in high school (usually with my friend Matt who is a meathead football player. ) Finally, just to get him to shut up I used the ol' dictionary.

And I can whip his ass in basketball :mean:

That's what I LOVE about scuba diving. It's NOT competitive !!

That is what makes it so relaxing and enjoyable.

I say scuba diving is a sport regardless what everyone else might think.

You do physical activity, you socialise, teamwork, adventure, it's....PERFECT :D

Sometimes I think there is a little competition in diving. When I go to Gilboa and see the guy suit up with double nitrox 80's, a DUI, 2 lights, float markers, sausage, coiled line, and all kinds of doodads hanging off his body to do a 30 - 40 min. day dive on the jet, bus, boats, cars, etc., it makes me wonder, or maybe I'm just a little jealous. Some of these divers are equipped to do an extended deep exploration cave/wreck dive in the Anarctic. I keep it to myself, but I do ask myself, "Why"? Maybe they're doing a practice dive to check out their equipment for some expedition they've got coming up later, so I'm not going to be too judgemental. However, I think some are just "showing off" their "toys". --Like in the old days when guys would "tool the strip" in their cars showing off all their custom modifications. Isn't this a form of Competition?

...I know why they do this. Diving with all that crap takes practice...you can't just dive with 2 stages, lights, liftbags, etc. a few times a year and expect to be good at it...you have to stay in practice. A lot of people dive the exact same gear they dive on "real" dives when they go to the quarry to practice. Sure it may look like overkill, but they are just getting familiar with the gear and practicing for when game day comes.

I hear that, and it's a very good reason.

That is precisely why I do it. I'm not showing off. In fact, I look at it as a learning experience. I get to see gear configs and equipment and get ideas.

That's half the fun of this "sport" the experimenting and evolving in our equipment.

diving is a hobby not a sport:doctor:

If you dive commercially then its a job.

If you dive competitively then you've missed the point.

Last night as we were floating in the water waiting for the last guy to get in, I listened to the guys one-uping eachother about how often and where and how many times they dive. Then it changed to equiptment... mine's better, that kind of stuff.
The dive plan was to go to 75 feet and work our way back. My randomly chosen buddy kept going deeper and at 84 feet I stopped him and adamantly pointed back (after the dive, he told me he was in the mood to break his own personal record and hit 100 feet).
After the dive, people were pointing their computers at eachother seeing who went the deepest (we did), who had the most air left , etc.
It's ironic that the dive shop calls these Wednesday night dives "Fun Dives".

Do computers and competive personalities promote deeper and longer dives?
