Both my children were certified at age 12. Both were strong swimmers, very comfortable in the water, highly motivated to dive, and easily able to handle the didactic work. I've been diving with my son for 18 years now and with my daughter for 13, both are very good divers.

Hi from Canada Boris!

Make sure you convince a parent or someone older to take up diving with you. As a "Junior" diver (for now) you will want an older person to dive with... and to buy you gear, drive you to sites, pay for lunch... all that important stuff. :)

It's an awesome sport though... but take it seriously as there is always the potential to hurt yourself or worse... even on so-called "beginner" dives.

And keep us posted on your progress!

Boris,

Go have fun buddy. Like Diverjen said, just make sure your instructor takes the time to make you understand what you are doing and how to go diving in a safe manner. Make it a sport for you man. You are young and the world of diving is a massive one. Safe diving.

Thank you. I will try to make this happen.

I've known some younger than you who were excellent divers. I've known several quite a bit older who shouldn't dive.

Are you comfortable in the water?
Are you sensible?

If the answer to both is "yes", you should be fine. The wonderful underwater world awaits.

Thank you. I think the answer is yes so i will try and see what happens.

Thanks. I think your advice is a good one and i will ask someone older to dive with me. When i am done with the course i will post my progress ( this will be after about 5 month because now here is winter ). Until then i may not be so active in posting but i will defenetly read the forum. :)

I think it is great that you will be trying it out. The only question I have is will your parents support you in your diving?

When I was young my parents did not dive but they approved of my diving and I had odd jobs and could drive a car so I had access to the ocean. It may be difficult at your age to find rides or gear without a job(s) or support from your family. Just something to consider - not to dissuade you from diving - just something to consider.

Thanks for your advice. My parents approve i will dive. Also my father can at least drive me to the place. So this is not a problem. :)

My own opinion - wait until you're 15 and you can do it without any restrictions and the frustrations and temptations that will naturally arise from the restrictions. I made my son wait until he was 15 and then he was able to progress OW -> AOW -> DM -> Instructor in one smooth sequence (and through the old CMAS path that included a lot of what nowadays would be called "harassment" training exercises ) passing everything first time whereas there were a lot of dropouts on the tough courses.

While he complained at the time he agreed later that I was right to make him wait and it made him think about his objectives and take it much more seriously. It was also a lot easier to get the physics and physiological concepts right first time.

Thank you for your answer.

I had my first SCUBA experience at about your age. I'm still diving 50+ years later! I have seen divers as young as 10 diving here with instructors. While I think that is a bit too young, as long as you approach this with maturity and pay attention to what you are taught, you may be on your way to a life-long adventure!
