Dr. Espinola: Diving Accident Claims Life of a Japanese Tourist
Guam - Medical Examiner Dr. Aurielo Espinola reports that a diving accident has claimed the life of a Japanese tourists.
It is the second death of a Japanese tourist in as many days in the waters off the island.
Dr. Espinola told PNC News that he has not yet performed an autopsy on either the 74 year old man who was pulled from the waters of Tumon Bay yesterday [Tuesday] nor has he performed an autopsy on the diver who was brought in today [Wednesday].
The families of both victims have asked for the autopsy to be delayed until they can arrive on island and he said he agreed to their request.
GFD Spokesman Ed Artero says that there was a reported diving accident this morning but he was unaware of a death in the case. GPD Spokesman Lt. Art Paulino was not aware of a fatal diving accident.

There's a bit on confusion here. The diving fatality was a 58 year old man on the 17th; the 74 year old man died the day before, apparently while swimming. For those who have been to Guam, The Crevice is just next to Blue Hole.

Guam Police Investigating Death of Diver at "The Crevice" Off Orote Point

Guam Police Spokesman Lt. Art Paulino reports that GPD is investigating the death of a 58 year old Japanese diver who was pulled unconscious from the water off Orote Point Wednesday morning.

Coast Guard Chief Brian Koji told PNC News that the they received a VHF call at 10:10am reporting an unconscious diver aboard the "Sea Fantasy."

A response boat was launched, the unconscious diver was taken aboard. "He was not breathing at the time he was recovered," said Chief Koji. CPR was performed on the man as he was transported to the Sumay Cove Marina where an ambulance then rushed him to Naval Hospital.

Naval Hospital Spokeswoman Jennifer Zingalie says he was pronounced dead at 11:41am.

Chief Koji said the man was pulled unconscious from the water, but he could not say what caused him to become unconscious. The Coast Guard, he said, is conducting its own investigation.

Meanwhile, Lt. Paulino says that a Tumon dive company named "Gently Blue" conducted the dive. Dive Instructor David Passauer told police that he took a group of 4 divers to an area known as the Crevice, 200 yards off Orote Point.

He took the group down to about 45-feet when the victim was observed breathing rapidly. Passauer said he took the man up slowly, but he had passed out by the time they reached the surface. He put him about the dive boat and began "emergency breathing" until the Coast Guard arrived.

Lt. Paulino said that the victim was PADI certified and had done 117 dives.

This was the second water related death in as many days. Tuesday, a 74 year old Japanese tourist was pulled from the waters off Tumon Bay by off duty GPD Officer Ernest Quintanilla.
