I'm a Fish!
Hi,
I am moving out to hawaii August first. I am currently getting my divemaster certification. I was hoping to talk to some places before moving out there about potential job opening in a shop or as a dive master. if anyone has information on good shops to look into or if you know of any place that might be hiring that would be fantastic. Right now i am open to living anywhere on the islands so any leads would be awesome!! thank you all!

I can't comment on whether or not he is looking for help, but Gabe (Scottitheduck here) at Kaimana Divers has been around Oahu for a while. I'd trust his connections and insight into various operations.

Aloha,

That's fantastic about your divemaster rating. It opens the doors to an amazing world and an amazing life here in the islands. There are a number of areas you may wish to research to determine where it is that you will wish to move in terms of the different islands. Diving in the islands is very diverse for starters. While similarities exist - each island has distinct differences as well.

Summer is a good time to come since it is the busy season here in the islands but many shops ramp up hiring pre-summer to make sure that they are staffed. At the same time (in my opinion) you can find a job diving any time throughout the year on any of the islands. Getting some contacts and beginning dialog with some DM's/instructors/owners in advance will help you out in advance for sure - so I think it's smart that you are starting now.

Hawaii has a great deal of very professional and experienced individuals and shops for that matter and you'll find many of us happy to share and help you out.

Have you visited any of the islands yet?

One thing that you'll find is the necessity to have a plan to get your OWSI. Instructors are of the biggest value for shops and having that rating will open even more opportunities in the islands. You can get that done on any of the islands when the time is right. As a DM you'll still be able to find work and get excellent training.

If you would like to have some books regarding marine life sent to you in advance I can certainly help you there. Having some knowledge in advance can only help and will show further initiative on your part which goes a long way.

Scottie the duck on Oahu (Gabe) and Shaka Doug on Maui can be great resources here. I've had a lot of respect from what I've seen communicated by them over the years and they have VERY good reputations. Personally I am on Kauai though I have dove throughout the islands over the past 20 years. If you have any specific questions feel free to send me as many messages as you like.

Have a fantastic weekend and I will look forward to hearing from you
