I just got back from 8 days of diving in Taveuni, Fiji where every dive had current / was a drift. Similar to you saying it was not like Cozumel, Taveuni was very different from Cozumel currents as well. Can you or anyone else speak to how Taveuni currents compare to Komodo? Currents changed direction and intensity mid dive as the tides change dramatically in the Somosomo Strait, also had to synchronize entries with the entire boat to not miss the sites, so maybe they are somewhat similar?

Though I have not dove Fiji what you are describing does sound similar to what we experience in Komodo. Add Bill's advice about launching smb and having other safety gear you will be on the right track.

When I dive in place like Komodo, I carry these:
1. 6' DSMB
2. Mirror
3. Light
4. Dive Alert
5. Whistle
6. Knife
7. PLB1

One comment regarding the signal mirror. They are laminated plastic which when repeatedly exposed to water will 1) delaminate and 2) warp. So what to do with them? Obviously seal them - which is easily done with a "Seal-a-Meal" or similar device.
