Hi, Mike here, President of Nautilus Lifeline
We have been in touch with Scott over in Hawaii. The fellow who had the
really troubling drift out to sea. We hope to receive his unit in our lab
very shortly. This last week has been very troubling and there has been a
considerable amount of discussion and feedback on our design side as well as
with our dealers and distributors and with many, many people on forums and
chat rooms. We're very grateful to everybody for their feedback.

We're taking some proactive steps without knowing exactly what happened out
in Hawaii. We believe we can make the product even better by shifting our
thinking on the firmware. Up until now, we have recommended that the unit
get charged every couple of months or if the battery level drops below 80%.
Make sure the O-ring is clean and take the Lifeline away and go diving. Is
there if you need it. We now think that it would be better to treat the
Lifeline with the same level of care that a rebreather or other complex
equipment such as a camera is treated i.e. if you're going out on a dive
that may require a Lifeline, it's best to test it and check everything
before you go on the dive. We are going to update the firmware to include a
self diagnostic test that can be performed by the simple touch of a button.
So before you go diving all you have to do is open the lid and press the
button for a couple of seconds and the unit will go into a diagnostic
routine, load test the battery for 4 or 5 seconds and hopefully send a
message that reads “diagnostic check complete, clear to go diving”.

We are also going to switch the display over to continuously show the
percentage of battery level. We're going to modify the button so that the
strobe can be activated without being in the distress mode. And we are going
to adjust the Lifeline desktop software so that a battery conditioning mode
can be activated.

All of these things are intended to tweak and improve what we already hope
is very good functionality on the Lifeline. One of the great things about
the Lifeline is that it is a peripheral computing device which means that
all that an owner of a Lifeline has to do to upgrade the firmware is open
their Lifeline desktop software, click on update, and have their Lifeline
connected to the computer via a USB cord. Everything else should happen
automatically.

We welcome all suggestions and feedback and ideas on anything we can do to
make this great product even better. Our goal remains “Get found. Fast”.
Please don't hesitate to write.

Captain Mike Lever.

Hi Mike, I have been reading the Scott situation with much interest having recently purchased a unit as soon as they come into the UK. Can you please tell me why Scott felt he now needs to carry 2 units ? As many people will only purchase one unit. Also I recently asked our local skipper which channels they use for local discussion, thinking I would programme this instead of using channel 16 all the time and he told me in Brighton UK the local boats use channel 8 for chatting but I have noticed the unit doesnt have access to channel 8 in the UK. WHY ?

The skipper felt it would be better if the unit could be programmed to channel 8 and 16 so you could call up the boat on channel 8 without alerting everyone, then if no reply on 8 then use 16 nd then the distress buttons.

Having attended my VHF course to gain my licence I understand DSC messages are transmitted down channel 70 as this is just used for DSC messages again channel doesnt seem to be an available channel. I have posted on Yorkshire Divers in the UK regarding your unit and there doesnt seem to be much knowledge on these units but lots are being purchased.

Any further developments ??? It all seems to have gone very very hush hush.

Weighing in on this just to support manufacturers that give a d**m about what they sell.

If I'm wrong, -will retract. For now: Kudos! and I got mine!

Sorry mate I don't understand your message above.

I was asking if developments have come of reviewing Scott's unit and changes since.

Thanks for the open mind, I tend to be cynical. Trying to improve.

Looks to me like some diver didn't attend to details and it is seriously affecting the manufacturer. In this case, the manufacturer may be doing his/her best.

-support what you want more of, fight what you don't...

+1.. Good luck keeping a big SMB upright in the wind... I have the Halcyon Super Big Dive Alert Marker (6' tall) which I had to deploy once when our group separated and sea conditions turned bad during the dive.. The wind was blowing a steady 15-20 and it was a workout to keep it vertical.. The SMB Scott showed in the video looks even larger.. That wouldn't have been any fun if the wind was blowing as hard as rgbmatt stated.
I am thinking it might be easier to see an SMB laying horizontally rather than vertically from an airplane. Any Coasties out there to chime in on this?

I'm not a coastie, but I would think that the SMB is always best seen when it's perpendicular to the viewer's line of sight.

Some greater usage of the lifeline is coming into action in the UK now and the Lifeline teams have made some excellent quick improvements following feedback.
