Aloha! I'm looking for some help with a Hawaiian word - Makau. I know it means 'hook' and I know the cultural and symbolic meaning of the word, but I don't know how to properly pronounce it.

I've searched the web and come up empty. I think it is pronounced "mah-kah-oo" but not really sure. I figured one of you local divers would know the proper way to say it...

Any help is appreciated. Mahalo!

that was easy! thanks, dude.

If the pronunciation is maka'u then the meaning is:

makaʻu

nvt. Fear; frightened, afraid, cowardly, timid, unsafe, dangerous. Makaʻu ʻoia i ke kaua, he is afraid of war. Cf. makaʻuhia, makaʻulia. hoʻo.makaʻu To frighten, scare, terrify, make afraid; fear; to pretend to fear. (PPN mataku.)
