I went to last night's film festival and was totally blown away.

By far the most value for $5 ever spent.

That was world class.

Many thanks to everyone who made that possible.

Guess there wasn't much of a turn out for beginners if the same guy won't first and second place, and got an honorable mention. Where are the winning photos and videos posted?

There were 67 entrants. 20 were in beginner. Good turnout.

Winning images will be posted in a few days at http://www.montereyshootout.com.
I'll post here when they are up (if someone doesn't beat me to it).

I had to leave early but what I saw from the presenters was amazing. I loved the footage of the hammer heads, sperm whale pics, and the Oceans video. How late did the event end up going and did they show all the contestants pictures?

I think you are on to something there Jak Crow. You can see from Chuck's posting that the beginners only competed in 1 category while the intermediate had 4 categories and the advanced had 4 categories too. So the accumulated points and prizes were heavily weighted for the experienced photogs. The final standings look like this with the highest ranking "beginner" placing 24th:

1. 25.5020 pts Derek Emmett (#12) Intermediate
2. 23.3450 pts Joseph Platko (#34) Intermediate
3. 20.4000 pts Brad Brown (#3) Video
4. 18.3600 pts Jeff Honda (#62) Advanced
5. 16.8300 pts Chuck Tribolet (#48) Advanced
6. 16.5000 pts Bryan Patrick (#67) Beginner * Professional Photographer (Sacramento Bee)
7. 15.2510 pts Lanette Otvos (#33) Intermediate
8. 13.0560 pts Sami Laine (#58) Advanced
9. 13.0560 pts Mark Krag (#26) Advanced
10. 12.9280 pts Angelina Galindo (#14) Intermediate
11. 10.4040 pts Kathy Mendes (#29) Advanced
12. 9.2820 pts Mike Costa (#64) Advanced

Jak Crow noticed that one beginner, won first, second, and honorable mention. That means he won on 3 out of 3 entries which is surprising that the judges let him compete in that category. It says in the rules that if you have won more than $500 in prizes or upon their determination they can move people to a higher category. Bryan Patrick has won a lot of contests for his photography over the years. There is one here where he is shown holding a Cannon G12 which is more than $500. Monthly Clip Contest

It was a fun contest and I learned a lot. I just hoped it would be open to beginners winning "fabulous prizes" like it was advertised.

The rules specify "underwater photography contest", not "photography contest". It looks to me that he won the G12 in a non-underwater contest.

Monterey Shootout - Underwater Photography, Videography, Competition in Monterey, California
Photo Competition Skill Levels: Beginner
If you are a new underwater photographer, this is the category for you. In the spirit of rewarding new photographers, entries in this category are limited to photographers who have taken a camera diving less than 50 dives and have won less than $500 in prizes in any underwater photography competition or have received less than $500 in payment for any underwater photography work. Our panel of judges reserve the right to eliminate any Beginner entries that they feel should have been entered in the Intermediate category based on the entrant's experience.

So that is 1.400 points for Chuck and 25.239 points for the beginners.

This makes it look like they stacked the deck to so that a professional walked away as a winner instead of a real beginner. And here I had considered entering. Why would those just starting out in underwater photography enter when they find out they're going up against a pro that has thousands of dollars of high end equipment at his disposal, or is slumming it with a point and shoot?
