Mucofen and Diving?

Just wondering if any of the docs had any experience with the perscription drug mucofen?

I've taken it in the past for sinus problems (which vary by time of year here in FL). The way my doc explained it was a decongestant that works more towards clearing your sinuses, and not so much on your throat. I didn't have a chance to ask about how it relates to diving, since I got the perscription a while ago and was to "take as needed". I took it once on my deep dive and I had no problems getting down to 90+.

The active ingredient in Muco-Fen is guaifenesin, a compound intended to thin secretions so that these may be more easily brought up from the lungs/down from the sinuses and expelled.

It is generally very well tolerated, although on occasion adverse reactions do occur. Reported side effects include nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, constipation & rash. Some of these are not compatable with safe scuba.

As you reportedly have taken this medication previously, you should be aware of your reaction to it.

I do not know of any studies that have focussed on guaifenesin and diving.

I appreciate the info. I've not had any of the side effects so far. I'll make sure to mention something about it to my general pract. next time I visit.

I also agree that, while some of the side effects may not pose a problem with scuba, they can pose a problem with finding potential buddies
