The wing nut/compression washer (aka lock washer) combination works great for adjusting reel tension. That's what I used on both of my reels I made. On one reel's spindle, I end-tapped and installed a flathead screw to keep the wing nut from completely backing off. Be sure and put a stainless washer and nylon washer between the compression washer and the reel body to protect the reel from scoring.
