Cozumel, Q.R. — Another ferry company has begun operating the Cozumel-Playa del Carmen route. On Friday, Xcaret Xailing announced the start of ferry passenger service from the island to the mainland.

According to the company, the passenger serive will be offered every hour starting with a 7:30 a.m. departure from Cozumel to the mainland Playa del Carmen. The last ferry will run 8:30 p.m. from Cozumel and 9:30 p.m. from Playa del Carmen.

One way tickets for adults start at 249.00 pesos or 509.00 pesos for a round trip. Discounts are available for locals. The ferry also has a pet area.

When both were running at the top of the hour (pre covid) it made no sense.

Not recommended, anyway, unless you know the exact timing of your return trip. Just buy a one way ticket for the next ferry.

When the crook running UltraMar passed away and the business model (massive bribes) was disrupted, I remember reading about a dispute between them and Isla Mujeres over remittance of the 'non local' (Gringo Tax) monies that had been collected from ticket sales. It was in the millions of peso's. What I gleened from reading the news articles was that the additional cost of a ticket, for non-locals, was not set by the ferry operator but basically a tax imposed by the government. I suspect there is a similar 'Tax' on the Playa to Cozumel route which drives the two tier pricing for locals and non locals
