I get the impression from reading posts that DIR is a term to depict politically correct, vegitarian, PETA members that are Democrats, and is a life style more than a diving thing.

That's about half true.
Nothing politically correct about it.
Many believe that a vegeterian diet is more healthy.
I know of many that don't have a problem with consuming fish or a burger.
There may be some PETA members that are DIR divers.
See above.
I'm sure there are some Democrats that are DIR divers.
I know there are some Republicans who are DIR divers.
