"Pasa el tiempo pero debido a la inexistencia de corrientes el sedimento no se deposita, confían entonces en que los compañeros que están en la barca, sobre todo el que no buceo, se acuerden de la existencia de la cámara de aire y acudan con una línea de vida para facilitar la salida."

The above sentence in the recount is quite key.

Basically, in the recount these divers are being referred as very experienced and having done many cave dives in the area, and yet, according to the above sentence, only when they are lost in the cave unable to exit they hope that those on the boat:

"...remember that there is a an air chamber and place a guideline to enable the exit."

P.S. For those not cave trained, the guideline is placed in the cave in the first place IMMEDIATELY before entering the cave to assist the exit in case of loss of visibility (not when one is already lost/disoriented...).
