The secret to Deadman's Reef isn't aerobic exercise. It's a scooter! :)
 
For the longer swims like Deadman's it seems there is no subsitute for sport specific conditioning. I know I have been in good aerobic condiction and still got calf cramps 70 minutes into a dive but have been less well conditioned aerobically but diving a lot and able to do two hour dives with a lot of surface swimming there and back. Being fit is an underappreciated safety factor for scuba.
