Yes. Symptoms of overexpansion injuries usually show up within minutes of surfacing.
 
Hi all, I'm new here & to diving and apart from Sharks, L.O.E is the only other threat I fear.

Reading through the thread I saw someone saying that breathing at ascent is fine and its not just exhaling that's required.

Since I'm just in my certification depth for now (max 13 meters), our direct ascents start at 9meter or so, with a safety stop at 5m. Should I be at ease taking in view that inhaling and exhaling while ascending is fine or should a concious effort be made towards exhaling ONLY ?
 
You should inhale and exhale all through your ascent and safety stop- the key is not to take a deep breath and ascend while holding it. Just breathe normally and go up slowly.
