There are two parts to a diving class. There is the academic portion -- if you are fairly bright and willing to do a little reading, it's not difficult. E-learning can be a very efficient way to manage this part of the class, because it allows you to move at your own pace, in your own surroundings, at times when it is convenient for you. The downside of E-learning is that it's possible to skate . . . anybody who has learned to suss a multiple choice test by analyzing the answers knows that you can bluff your way through almost anything. Passing standard isn't very high -- but you owe it to yourself to know the material better than that, because some of it will impact how much fun you can have, and some of it will impact whether you survive the experience. (And no, I'm not indulging in hyperbole.)

If you're a skier, you know that how much fun skiing is is directly proportional to the skill you have as a skier; diving is no different. Rushing your certification means you will probably come out of it able not to drown, but clumsy and awkward and inefficient in the water. Such a diver sees little and can't stay down long -- it isn't the experience of which you are dreaming.

Find a shop that will do some in-city pool sessions at night; take your time and get really comfortable before you head out on your vacation. Then do the OW dives somewhere where, after you do the skills, you can do a tour where the life is inspiring. You'll have a great class, and come out ahead of the game on becoming a steady diver.
