[h=1]2 divers found dead inside sunken vessel in Lapu-Lapu City | Sun.Star

2 divers found dead inside sunken vessel[/h]
By Jinky R. Bargio and Rebelander S. BasilanFriday, March 15, 2013..

A DAY after they went missing, the bodies of two divers were found yesterday by the Philippine Coast Guard inside a sunken vessel off the coast of Barangay Canjulao in Lapu-Lapu City.
Alger Sumaylo and Glenn Pahit were employed by the salvaging company that has been trying to refloat a vessel that capsized in the area in July last year.
They were instructed by the owner of the salvaging company to guard the vessel. Both were reported missing last Wednesday.

Yesterday, Aurelio Pitogo, owner of Omega Steel and Marine Services, ordered his men
to dive under the sunken vessel to look for Sumaylo and Pahit.
Audie Hondo, one of the divers, said he was saddened when he saw the bodies of his friends floating.
They immediately called the Coast Guard (CG) for help.

Before noon yesterday, a CG team was sent to the area.
Pitogo said that while everyone was away, Sumaylo and Pahit could have decided to dive into the seawater to get scrap material. The two were in complete diving gear when they were found.
Pitogo said he suspended the salvaging operation last week yet.
“We’re just waiting for a salvaging vessel to haul the materials so we can bring the sunken vessel to shore,” Pitogo said.

Crew members dismissed the angle of foul play since all the victims’ belongings were intact.

Both bodies were already decomposing when retrieved by divers before lunch.

The cargo vessel mv B and A was carrying 23,000 bags of cement when it sank less than a mile from Canjulao in July last year.
After five months of salvaging operations, the vessel was re-floated on the first week of December, but it sank again after two days.
Pitogo said the bad weather and big waves the past months slowed the salvage operation.

The owner decided to cut and dismantle some parts of the ship to make it easier for the crane ship to lift the materials from underwater.
Mandaue District Detachment Commander Edilberto Amor told Sun.Star Cebu that the owner of the salvaging company may be held liable for negligence, but they still have to conduct a thorough investigation to find out how the incident happened.

Pitogo also requested the police to conduct an autopsy on the bodies.
He assured that he will shoulder the victims’ burial expenses and he will give financial aid to their families.

I used to live near Lapu Lapu. Sad to hear divers lost their lives.

It saddens me to think that they were probably trying to do a little salvaging on their own.
