it's time to get me some gear.
I've been renting so far and wasn;t very happy with the gear I used the last time around and vowed never to deal with it again...
So I'm ready to buy at least a reg setup. (I felt very unsafe with my last rental reg) I've done my research and have narrowed it down. I don;t want this to turn into a brandname discussion so I'll leave names out.
At this point in my life I consider myself a recreational diver. I like adventures, remote places and packing light. I was advanced certified a few years ago in Thailand and fell in love with it. All I had was time and diving was cheap.
Other than that I went to Belize and am now planning a trip to Mexico. I do plan on diving the rest of my life ( ie A nice vacation once a year. maybe 2)
When I decide to quit my job and leave Babylon behind to become a full time dive bum I'll submitt another post requesting advice on upgrades. As of now I'm an adventure traveler who likes to explore underwater as well.
So now to the questions:
1) What if I decide to go to California to visit friends and want to dive monterey. Do I NEED a cold water reg for an occasional fairly cold dive. (No ice diving for me as of yet) Also is the Galapagos cold water? I can;t wait to go there someday soon.
2) Should I pull the trigger on a BCD? I want to. I'm just thinking about my packing light issue. Like I said I don;t like renting. THe BCD however , is something that I can deal with I guess. But then I have to waste time, money , etc on dive day which I hate. Plus the convenience of having everything may spur me to dive more.
3) Longevity- How long ,if properly maintained ,will gear last? I'm a buy once kind of guy. I love gear but I'm not a gear head. I buy good stuff and deny myself the urge to spend spend spend on the latest and greatest. I like the old school look anyways.
Thanks in advance for any input.
Cheers
PS - thanks scubaboard for all your help so far with equipment reviews. It;s helped a lot.
