My girlfriend and I each carry a 3cu ft Spare Air. ...//... Maybe the $$ for two Spare Airs would have been better spent on a single, larger pony--but we might as well use what we have!

Spare Air's are dirt cheap. You get what you pay for. Sounds like you are using them for a false sense of security. After your first underwater "Come to Jesus/Allah/God moment" *pick your deity or lack thereof* I'm sure that you will reassess your self-rescue requirements. Just remember that two divers can both run out of gas at about the same time, no matter how much gas they started out with.

Maybe, maybe not.

If you emergency ascent plan relies upon assistance from your buddy to provide redundant air supply..... then you really don't need a pony bottle (or a spare airs)...

Given the context, some serious dark humor here...
