I lost my spool once as well. I pretty much just let the thing float above me and picked it up when I surfaced
yeah, I don't understand why someone would chase $50 worth of gear when you know exactly where it'll be in 3min time anyway. just complete the SS looking up instead of down.
oh, and if it's an orally inflate version like the old Oceanics, trade it in...they're a PITA to inflate when you're <15m deep. The velcro with seal work very well.
