Hey all,

I'll admit it. My wife doesn't know exactly how much I've spent on this great activity of ours (actually, she probably doesn't want to know). I'm wondering how many others fall into the sneaky buying purchases, if anyone's been busted, etc.

I tend to leave my wife out of the loop on gear purchases as well. It is typically better for me if she finds out about a purchase after the fact.

My latest purchase for the upcoming dive year an Olympus 5050 was justified by the ScubaBoard of all things. I explained to her that I wanted an underwater camera to capture our dives( our son 13 year old son James is my dive buddy) and that I would research it on the ScubaBoard.

"Oh the ScubaBoard that is all you ever do anymore!"

Based on the ScubaBoard input I could not just buy a cheap underwater camera like the SeaLife DC300, no I need an Oly 5050 and probably a strobe, a housing, memory cards and a couple of dive trips with my buddy.

I have found that the old saying "It is easier to beg for forgivness than ask for permission" applies. Who needs that new comforter for the bed anyway?

Oh- I hear ya!!!- I have to hide the purchases from my husband by telling him they were on sale- It gets embarassing sometimes when my husband is on a dive boat bragging about how cheap our equipment was - the world must think we get a hellava deal-

Not to mention the cost of our dive trips- My hubby seriously thinks that you can get a week diving in the cayman islands for $150

$150 for a week in the Caymans, my wife needs to talk with your husband's travel agent as well.

My wife doesn't dive, but supports my interests 200%. If I rip a neck seal she wants to buy me a new dry suit. I tell her I just need a new seal. She says it never hurts to have a back-up dry suit. I tell her we can't afford it. She says we'll make do.
She says, let's make sure we go on vacation where you can dive every day. She loves to go with me to every dive and sit on the beach/boat. She budgets it in. This year we settled on Kona.
"How much are the boat dives?" she asks. I tell her I'll do beach dives and save money. She goes on line and says, "Here's a good deal on a package of 10 dives including the Manta night dive. Want me to email them to see if you can solo? I know how you hate to be toured around in a group."
"No," I tell her, "Kona has great shore dives."
"At least do the manta night dive. I know you want to do that."
"Yeah, thanks."
The house needs panting. She says, if we wait until next year I can get that new BP/wings/reg/weight system I've been looking at. But I know she really wants the house painted, so I'll wait.
Oh yes, it's more than just luck....

My "SO" is also an inst. so almost all equip. purchases are X2. We do at least one liveaboard per year so that's X2 but we're having fun! Dive Safe-M
